6th Grade Social Studies Poetry

Microloans, by Henry Mankowski

Microloans
Caring, small, helpful, life-changing
Relative of conventional loans
Lover of helping people in need, loaning money, and repayments
That feels like giving people a fresh start and hope
Who fears poverty and turmoil
Who would like to see rebuilding communities and opportunity
The helper of the world, Microloan.

Apartheid, by Nicole Dowling

Apartheid
Selfish, racist, cruel, painful,
Relative of fallen angels,
Lover of nothing,
Who feels great, high, and mighty,
Who needs hatred, war and whips,
Who gives evil, hurt, and suffering,
Who would like to see Africans jailed,
Resident of human hearts,
Apartheid.

Nelson Mandela, by Deepak Sharma

Nelson
Former President of South Africa, ender of apartheid, independent,
Relative of peace,
Lover of freedom, South Africans,
Who feels apartheid needed to end and people should free,

Who needs food, love, and respect from the Afrikaners [white So. Africans],

Who is fearless,
Who gives freedom, kindness, leadership,
Who would like to see worldwide peace, Africa's problems solved,
 and everyone's success,
Resident of South Africa,
Mandela

Edline is an on-line program which permits parents to view their student's grades (with itemized assignment lists), which are regularly posted by their subject-area teachers.  In order to access your child's grades, you need to register.  Information is sent home each fall to new middle school parents.  Parents only need to register once (for 4 years of MS).  Parents who have formerly registered for an Edline account should use their original user name and password.  If you have misplaced that information and/or need assistance setting up your account, please email Mr. Raymond at:  craymond@walden-school.org.

Please note that teachers regularly send email grades, personal memos, and missing assignment lists to parents via Edline and assume that parents have accounts.  Please let your child's teachers know to communicate via mail if Edline is not an option for you.

~ Important Dates ~
 All School Thanksgiving Dinner
on Friday, November 20, 2009

We will be participating in our "All School Thanksgiving Dinner" on Friday, November 20, 2009.  This is a special time when the faculty, staff and students sit down together to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving meal prepared by our kitchen staff.  Unfortunately, space limitations do not allow for parents or additional guests to join us for lunch on this day.  We will not be taking lunches from home into the cafeteria; however, most classes will have a mid-morning snack.  We encourage students to wear "dressy" clothes to school for this occasion.  If your child goes to extended day, you may want to send a change of clothing.  We look forward to celebrating this Walden Tradition with your children and to the wonderful memories it generates.

Grandparents Day on Tuesday,
November 24, 2009

We are looking forward to Grandparents Day on Tuesday morning, November 24, 2009 from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.  Students, please bring your grandparents or someone special to share this experience.  Lower and Middle School students will visit their classrooms and special area classes with their grandparents and enjoy refreshments.  Mark your calendars for this Walden Tradition!

Global Lens 2009 -  Check out this web site for international cinema which will be shown this month at the Muhammad Ali Center:    http://www.louisvillefilm.org

Walden School's International Theme - Check out Mr. Kimbrough's weekly Geoquiz question.  Mr. Kimbrough is one of our high school social studies teachers, and at each Monday morning assembly this year, he will present a geography question, which students can research and email their answer by 1:00 PM on Friday.  All students who answer correctly will be eligible to have their name placed in a random drawing to receive a special t-shirt commemorating this year's international theme.  Here's the link to check out this week's question:  www.walden-school.org/display_pagecontent.php?id=1117
